Label Research

Similar band that follow the same genre as my chosen band are bands such as Simple Plan, Bowling For Soup, Blink 182 and Sum 41.

Simple Plan signed to Atlantic/Lava Record(Universal)
Bowling For Soup signed to Jive (RCA Music Group). They now own an independent record Crappy Records
Blink 182 - Geffen Records (Universal)
Sum 41 - Def Jam (Universal)

I have come to the conclusion that Universal music group would be the best place to find a record deal for my band

RE8 Nine Frame Still Analysis

Stills from Greenday's song

1. Mise-en-scene- This is another close up image of the lead singer coming into the camera. You can clearly see the girls dancing in the background, this shows the song is face paced and able to have girl dancers in the background. Many punk/rock music video's do not have much dancing.

2. Music and visuals- From this shot the singer looks very angry and gives the viewer the impression that the lyrics are harsh and angry however, the song is very fast paced and the lyrics are not what they seem. The photo looks almost like something out of a horror movie as the surroundings are so dark and so is the singer.

3. Conventions of genre- This long shot of all the band members, all dressed in black gives the idea of a gothic band and songs. Their stance indicates a male dominated group, with the lead singer appearing to be 'number one' and the other two equals. They also look quite intimidating which would probably not appeal to the younger generation. This is a typical rock band made up of young males.

4.Lighting- This long shot shows the audience the location of the video. It seems like they are in some deserted warehouse. However, having the light coming through shows it is not a complete gothic video. It shows they can also have fun in their video's and not take it so seriously.

5. Artists image- This is a close up of the lead singer. You can immediatley see what genre this music video is due to the make up he his wearing. The black eyeliner gives it a gothic/emo feel. The black hair can also contribute to the gothic look. He seems to be fixated on the camera giving the song meaning. Throughout the song, the lead singer does not move around much giving a relaxed image. This can also suggest arragonce about him especially with the lyrics 'idiot'.

6. Camerawork- This is a shot of part of the video with the main camera looking directly towards the singer but you can also see another screen just in front and to the right of the main one. This looks like it is the on screen camera which the editor looks through. It works well because it is unusual.

7. Type of music genre- In this shot it really lets you know the genre is punk/rock. A close up of the singer with his black eye make up on and with his hand gestures implying he is shooting himself in the neck. He is also looking up and pulling the face that somebody would pull in that situation.

8. Cinematography- This is a low angled shot looking up at the main singer playing his guitar and singing. The good thing about this shot is that you can also see the clothes he is wearing from the waist upwards. He is all in black with a red tie. This red tie could mean either danger, seductiveness or maybe because it is part of the American flag.

9. Main character- In this final shot, it is another close up of the lead singer. However, this time he is looking down on the camera with a big wide eyed expression on his face. This once again highlights the scary and gothic like feel to the video. You can see the black make up he is wearing around his eyes very clearly as if he is showing them off just to let the public know about the genre.

P16 Health and safety! (Its actually important)

Well, for this music video we have few hazards to sort these include:
- Electrical instruments.
- Be aware of cables when filming the Band scene
- Be careful when using musical instruments or props that are not owned by yourself.
- Glass bottles, ensure all labels are removed and any alcoholic contents (Or all contents and not consumed by the actors)
- 'Tripping scene', we don't want to injure any actors!
- Running with camera (Ensure it is strapped tight onto the hand)
- Be careful when filming scenes on steps/stairways.
- When using green-screen ensure wires are tucked away safe, lights are not pointed into actors eyes and that they are standing safely without a risk of falling.

Thanks!
Jonny

P4 Initial planning ideas

P11 Costume Planning

Due to the genre of the song which is rock/punk we thought it would be best to dress all the actors and band members in dark clothing but not too dark. However, part of the music video the main actor is reminiscing about his time when he was with his girlfriend which were happy times. Therefore the costumes for this part of the video should be lighter and more normal clothes.

P7 Synopsis Planning

For the planning of our video we have come up with a shot list. This has helped us plan out how we want to film our video. For example we would like to do the green screen scenes first as that will be the hardest part, and then go on to doing the shots of the band etc. We have decided to have people out of the group to be in our music video playing in the band. We have someone playing the drums and another on a guitar. Some of our video will be filmed at Jeremy's house and the band scenes using the school's equipment and will be filmed after school.

RE11 DVD digipack analysis, layout, brand identity, image, text

This is a music DVD cover front and back of ABBA's 16 greatest hits. The layout to this is very simple yet effective. The background is black with ABBA in white in the middle of the front cover. This makes the band's name very prominent and everybody can see clearly who they are. The pictures of the four band members up the left hand side of the front cover is also very effective as you can see each one's face but they do not take up the whole cover. The back cover also shows a picture of the four of them face on from the shoulders up horizontally in the middle of the page again. This shows the public their individual image.

RE9 Youtube documantary #1 that gives us an insight to the genre!

Hey readers!
This interview with Greenday gives us an insight into the personality of punk rock/alternative rock genre bands.
The main insight this video gives us into the genre is fairly self explanatory however there are many hidden aspects that should be considered, for example, the hair styles, makeup and clothing portrays many conventions of a rock band, the dark eye makeup on Billie Joe Armstrong (Far left) shows they are slightly rebellious and different because makeup isn’t normally used on men, also his hair has been dyed black and made to look messy, this shows he may be a ‘lazy’ type of person however it could also portray a busy lifestyle and that there is a large amount of jobs to do whereas Mike Dirnt (Far right) has a different style to Billie Joe, his hair is made to seem fairly neat, not messy and just fairly straight forward however the sideburns show that he may have a slightly older style due to them not being completely ‘in’ fashion at the current time (However this video was in 2009 and therefore may be slightly unreliable for the current time) he also unlike Billie Joe is wearing no makeup, this shows more masculine features and is wearing a chain rather than a scarf like Billie Joe.
The main similarities between the three of them is that they are all wearing similar clothing, this consists of a leather jacket with black shirts and jeans, this shows they all have a very similar fashion sense and also that they like to be seen as a group wearing the same clothes as so people may see this as a uniform, so each member can also be associated with each other.
Another specific part of this is the semi-dark humour from the band members this can be seen when they are answering fan’s questions and make a joke about one of the fan’s name, this is the typical type of humour from punk rock/alternative rock bands due to the rebellious lifestyle, few fans may take offence in this however most understand it is a joke and turn a ‘blind eye’ to the offence from it.
Thanks guys!

RE4 Existing record company research

An existing record company is EMI Records UK. The Electrical and Musical Industries was formed in 1931 and it is now one of the world's leading music companies. Some of their record labels include Angels, Capitol, EMI Classics and Virgin Records. Many famous artists are signed with EMI including Robbie Williams, Katy Perry, The Beatles and Tinie Tempah. EMI goes right back to the beginings of music video's as one of the origional music companies founded by the person who created the gramophone, Emile Berliner. Since then, EMI has been through the change in technology from inventing the stereo recorder, helped with the magnetic tape and they were even behind the electrical television.
In the early 90's, EMI made the first album over the internet. They were also the first company to release a digital album download with David Bowie's 'Hours'.
Today, EMI distribute music across the globe covering a wide range of music genre's.
